Know your HR policies and procedures

Earlier this summer, I asked someone who had previously faced disciplinary proceedings what he had learned from the experience. He replied, “Know your policies and procedures.” I admit, reading your employers policies and procedures may be the last thing you want to do. That said, I have seen cases where people were unaware and, it almost cost them dearly.

Widely available

Most employers make their policies and procedures widely available on their intranet, employee portals, staff handbook or Human Resources Department. Your employer expects you to read, understand and implement their policies and procedures in your working activities (including working with colleagues, customers, patients and, clients).

Prevention is better than cure

Making it a priority to read and work in line with your organisation’s policies enhances your knowledge and beats facing any proceedings. If you have any questions or need help, ask your manager, HR department or trade union representative.

Transferable skills

Last but not least, working knowledge of policies and procedures can help you develop professionally, and with your day to day life. For example, I used my experience to appeal our son’s permanent exclusion successfully and during my role as a school governor and, running a business.

Knowing your organisation’s policies and procedures is an all-around investment that will pay off.
